Catch Cans like the Mishimoto Universal High-Flow catch can are primarily responsible for catching blow-by that is re-routed by your diesel truck’s crankcase ventilation system or CCV. This blow-by consists of oil and fuel vapors that enter the crankcase after combustion. Your truck’s CCV system will then re-route this oil and vapor through the intake.
Catch can’s have been around a while for gasoline powered automobiles, but what about Diesels? Because of their high compression ratios, diesels are especially susceptible to blow-by. Standard catch cans designed for most gas-powered vehicles won’t work for diesels though. They’re too restrictive, and they can cause serious issues like putting your truck in limp mode. Why does this happen? The high horsepower and torque of diesel trucks leads to very high crankcase pressures. A bigger, high-flowing catch can is needed for diesel applications.
Why Should You Get A Catch Can?
The crankcase ventilation system causes blow-by to enter your truck’s intake. This means your turbocharger, intercooler, intake, and other crucial parts can experience carbon build-up causing premature failure. Wouldn’t you rather pay the small price of a catch can to help prevent major failures like a bad turbocharger?
Mishimoto’s High-Flow Universal Catch Can was made for diesel trucks. They offer high-flowing catch cans that won’t restrict your CCV system but still capture significant blow-by. Inlet and outlet ports feature 1″ diameters compared to the standard 3/8″ outlets. A massive filter featuring CNC-Machined baffle catches harmful vapors and oil while simultaneously letting crankcase vapors pass through.
Worried about having another part to worry about or having to do more maintenance? Mishimoto makes it easy by allowing you to drain the catch can without removing the filter by using a 3/8 NPT plug on the bottom of the casing. They also provide the necessary hardware and a mounting bracket for easy installation too! Mishimoto also has a lifetime warranty on all of their products.
Want to see my thoughts on the High-Flow Catch can? Check out my review of Mishimoto’s High-Flow Universal Catch Can that I installed on my 2018 Ram 2500. This catch can is also one of the products mentioned in my “10 Best Gift Ideas For Christmas 2019” blog post.

Are you running wide tires or wheels with negative offset? Your tires throw dirt and mud down the sides of your truck that can cause paint chips or other damage. No need to worry! There is an easy solution! One of the best ways to preserve the sides of your truck is with the use of fender flares. Most fender flares are bolt-on and they come in a variety of styles and finishes! I’ve always been a fan of the “bolt-on” look flares as I really think they can make a truck look tough. Painted-to-match fender flares also look much better! I only found two companies that manufacture painted-to-match Fender Flares. I own an EGR Bug Guard, so I decided to purchase the EGR Painted Fender Flares from Realtruck.com. After installing them and driving with them for 2,000 miles, I wanted to give you guys my thoughts and observations.

No worries! Ram released their new trucks with a myriad of new features and options to meet the needs of truck owners all across the country! You can read our complete article about the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty trucks here. Make sure you stay tuned! We will be covering everything about the New 2019 Ram Diesel trucks at Diesel Resource!
Ram has manufactured the 4th generation Cummins trucks for 10 years now. That’s ten years without a significant body style change! We know the new 5th generation Ram Heavy Duty is coming this Fall, but we didn’t know about some impressive new features until two weeks ago. We had the chance to drive the new 5th generation Cummins in the El Dorado Canyon in Nevada. Here are ten new features of the 5th generation Ram Heavy Duty you need to know about.
12″ Uconnect Display
Ram’s new 5th Generation Heavy Duty trucks boast the most impressive head unit we have ever seen in a pickup truck. The new touchscreen 12″ Uconnect system gives users the ability to configure the display in many different ways. The entire screen can show one app or divide into two different screens! This is a major upgrade over the old 8.4″ Uconnect display found in the 4th generation Ram trucks. Now, you can view your navigation on one half of the screen, while simultaneously viewing your apple carplay or Media screens on the other half.
New Camera Views
Heavy Duty Ram trucks finally received a 360 Degree available camera. This is a feature we have been waiting for as these trucks are massive! The 360 degree camera makes navigating tight spaces easy and less stressful! They didn’t just stop there either. The new 5th Generation Ram trucks also feature a split-screen camera view giving you a line of sight down the entire length of the truck and trailer. The screen adjusts left or right on either the passenger or driver’s side to give you an even better view.
Ram introduced an optional auxiliary camera to help keep an eye on precious cargo too. You can position the auxiliary camera in the interior or exterior of your trailer. This feature gives 2019 Ram truck owner’s a configurable camera view for whatever they tow. This is a very valuable asset to truck owners who frequently tow expensive horses. Now you finally have the capability of keeping an eye on your horses while you drive!

Power Running Boards
If you’re a diesel enthusiast like me, you’ve probably considered installing a set of Amp Research Power steps on your truck. They give you the functionality of a running board, without having to look at an ugly set of running boards every time you approach your truck. Higher trim 5th generation Ram HD trucks will now feature power running boards. When a door to the cabin is opened, the running boards extend, giving you easy access into the cab. After the door is shut, the steps retract, hiding from sight! Ram definitely accomplished form and function with the addition of this new feature.
Power Running Boards
Harman Kardon Sound System
I previously owned a 2017 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn truck for about a year and I loved the Alpine sound system that came with the truck. Sound quality was fantastic and I could easily adjust my audio settings to match whatever type of music I was listening to. Ram’s 5th Generation HD trucks in higher trims feature a redesigned, 17-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Harman Kardon sound systems are commonly used in luxury cars like Mercedes, BMW, or Maserati. On the new Ram Heavy Duty trucks, this system even complete with a 750-Watt Amplifier and an 8″ Subwoofer. Ram clearly spared no expense when it came to interior design this year, but this sound system is definitely a highlight!

Bed Lowering System
Loading gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailers can often be a pain in the butt. You have to line up your truck properly with the trailer. Then you may have to raise or lower your trailer to properly connect it to your truck. 5th Generation Ram trucks now have a really neat feature to make loading your trailers easier. By pressing a button, you can activate Ram’s new Bed Lowering Mode. This new feature lowers the bed about 2 inches, allowing you to possibly avoid adjusting trailer height. It’s a convenient feature that makes accessing your bed slightly easier. I’m a fan of anything that saves me time or effort, so I’m all for the new bed lowering system.
Bed Lowering Mode
New Led Headlights from the factory /w Adaptive Front Lighting System
Factory headlights are disappointing across the board when it comes to diesel trucks. Even though projector headlights have been utilized on the 4th generation Ram trucks, the light output from the factory halogen bulb is still very poor. One of the first upgrades I complete on any truck I purchase is LED or HID lighting. The light output is much greater, allowing you to see better at night. Ram’s new 2019 Heavy duty trucks now have three available headlight variations. Lower trims, will receive new halogen reflective headlights. Middle trims will gain LED lighting in a reflective housing. High end models like the Laramie Longhorn or Limited models will receive LED projector headlights.
Models using LED projector headlamps also gain Ram’s Adaptive Front Lighting System or AFS. The AFS system gives headlamps up to 15 degrees of movement in each direction of travel. This will help drivers gain better vision when making turns at night!
Reflective LED HeadLamps
Projector LED HeadLamps
Reflective Halogen Headlamps are found on lower trims, like this Tradesman model.
Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring System
TPMS or Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems are standard in practically every diesel truck available. What about your trailer’s tires though? Trailer tire pressure is very important when towing heavy loads. It can be really time consuming to check trailer tires when they have more than one axle too. One of the most practical features added in the new 5th generation Ram heavy duty trucks is a new trailer tire pressure monitoring system. Now you can monitor trailer tire pressure from the instrument cluster. The new TPM systems can be used with up to four different trailers, giving you tire pressure of up to 12 trailer tires at a time.

New Safety Features
Several safety features were added to the 5th generation Ram trucks. Adaptive cruise control was added to give drivers a “smarter” cruise control. This feature helps slow the vehicle down when approaching someone ahead of you. Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking also help drivers brake more quickly and provide a boost to the safety aspect of driving a Ram Heavy Duty truck.

Modern Tailgate
While the tailgates found on 5th generation Ram heavy duty trucks are still no match for the new GMC tailgates, they did receive a couple of modern touches. Tailgates drop by pressing a button on nicer trims. Ram also added dampening control to remove the dreaded slamming of your tailgate. Ram also incorporated a new bed step that provides an aesthetic and functional solution to getting into your bed.

SiriusXM with 360L
With the 5th generation Ram Heavy Duty, Ram partnered with SiriusXM to give truck owners the ultimate radio experience. SiriusXM 360L includes more than 200 channels, thousands of recorded, on-demand programs, and increased play-by-play sports offerings. SiriusXM 360L recommends different channels and shows to you based on your preferences and listening habits. Perhaps the coolest feature however, is the ability to customize the settings and presets of multiple drivers.
Ram made history with their optional Aisin/Cummins combination capable of 1000 lb-ft of torque this year. They didn’t just claim the trophy for first truck to 1000 lb-ft of torque, but they are also introducing a myriad of new features to make the daily struggles of Ram truck owners easier. A new body style was introduced to give trucks a fresh, new look. Ram really worked hard to create an all-new truck capable of whatever you throw at it. While we have a good grasp on these trucks’ capabilities, we have had zero details about pricing! Today, Ram released their pricing for new 2019 Heavy Duty trucks, both the Ram 2500, and Ram 3500. 2019 Ram heavy duty trucks will start at $33,395 along with a $1,695 destination fee that is not included. Ram Cab and Chassis trucks including the Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 will start at $34,750.
Starting prices reflect 4×2 models featuring Ram’s standard 6.4L Hemi V8 Engine. Prices go up quickly based on upgrades like 4×4, upgrades in trim, or the optional 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel. The standard 6.7L Cummins with a six-speed 68RFE transmission is a $9,100 upgrade. High output Cummins trucks with the available Aisin transmission are an $11,795 upgrade. MegaCab models are available for an extra $1500.
Don’t forget! The pricing for 2019 Ram Heavy Duty trucks listed above does not include destination charges or the addition of one of the available Cummins Engines! Add the respective upgrade cost for complete pricing for a cummins equipped truck!
Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen GM and Ford make some big strides towards achieving close to 1,000 torque, but they both felt just a tad short. Ram, with their 5th generation heavy duty trucks, partnered with a newly designed 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, have shattered the 1000 ft/lb threshold. Don’t forget, unlike Ford and GM trucks, Cummins horsepower and torque numbers can be different between trim levels. Only the 2019 Ram 3500 equipped with the Aisin transmission is capable of 1,000 torque. Even with that being said, the 6.7L platform as a whole, received some significant changes! Find out what changed with this new 2019 6.7L Cummins engine below!

Ram just revealed their new heavy duty trucks at the Detroit International Auto Show. It’s been a long time coming. Unlike Ford or GM, Ram and Cummins have had the tendency to release a new “Generation” truck with a new motor about every every 6-8 years. This is much later than Ford or GM have traditionally done. Ford only had their 6.0L Powerstroke for 5 years, followed by their 6.4L Powerstroke for only 2 years! Between 2001 and 2008, GM had the LB7, LLY, LBZ, and LMM Duramax! This new 5th Generation Ram is coming 10 years after the release of the 4th generation cummins trucks! That really says something about the success Ram has had with the 4th gen. It’s proven itself to be an incredibly reliable, torque powerhouse that stayed true to Ram’s “Big Rig” look. It really set the bar high for whatever was to come next. So, do the 5th generation Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks meet our expectations?
$H1T, they certainly met my expectations.
I attend the big auto show at the Orlando Convention center every year, and this year they had the new Ram 1500 trucks available to test drive on an indoor course! I let my girlfriend drive the course because i’ve been warming her up to the idea of trading in her Mazda CX-5 for something more useful, AKA, a truck. The Ram 1500 was so impressive. It was quiet, which for her is a big deal, it had a 360 degree camera, the rear seats reclined (something only the megacab models featured), and it had a 12″ entertainment center. Ever since I had the chance to get up close with the new Ram 1500s, I have been eagerly anticipating the release of the 5th generation cummins. Add this experience to the fact that Cummins equipped trucks are my personal favorite, it got to the point where I couldn’t wait any longer. I literally had the unveiling scheduled on my google calendar so I could watch it live. Anyways, back to what you really want to know. What is up with the new 5th Ram Heavy duty trucks? Here is our breakdown of what makes the 5th Generation Cummins so special.
First to Break 1000 lb/ft Torque from the Factory
With Ford’s latest 6.7L Powerstroke and GM’s new L5P, Ram was behind the pack a little bit. Not any longer. This new Cummins motor cranks out 400 horsepower and 1000 lb/ft of Torque when paired with the Aisin 6 Speed Transmission. This is the first time a vehicle in this segment has hit that torque number from the factory. When paired with the standard non-aisin transmission, the new Ram Heavy Duty trucks make 370 horsepower and 850 torque. The new Cummins motor underwent some major changes to reach these numbers. Find out more by clicking here.

Ram Trailer Technology on New 5th Gen Cummins Trucks
I’m sure many of you have seen the ford commercials with their trailer technology and their ability to back-up a trailer by itself. While I will admit, it is pretty cool, I tow many different trailers so for me to go through the hassle of setting up every individual trailer is just unrealistic. When Ram revealed their new 5th Generation Ram 2500 and 3500, they said they’re focusing on features that Ram truck owners want and are easily accessible. Ram trucks have featured the high mounted LED camera for a while now, my latest Ram 2500 is equipped with it. Now, some Ram trucks will have a bed lowering feature. This will be a huge help to truck owners who tow frequently, especially with a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer. In addition to this, they also added some unique features like trailer tire pressure monitoring and an auxiliary camera hook-up that can be connected to a camera on the back, or inside of your trailer.

Newly Designed Interior of 2019+ Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 Trucks
Ram revamped the interior of the 5th Gen Cummins trucks to match their new 1500s. They’re designed with premium materials and feature some things like new storage areas, and a customizable gauge pack. With this generation, they also made big strides in terms of noise control. Cummins are loud trucks, personally that is one thing I like about them. Ram managed to reduce noise by 10 decibels on these new trucks. I actually got to witness this first hand at the auto show in Orlando. We drove up to a station where they had a big speaker blaring music towards the truck. They then showed you the difference when you have your window open versus when it is closed. What a difference! This is a feature we really think you guys who are at noisy job sites will enjoy. What is our favorite part about Ram’s new interior? The more luxurious models now come with a 12″ display screen that make this Ram’s interior more closely resemble a Tesla, than a full sized heavy duty truck.

5th Generation Cummins New Safety Upgrades
As technology advances, we are getting some really impressive features added to our trucks. On these new Ram trucks, they have added fully adaptive cruise control with a full stop feature, as well as forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking as some available safety upgrades. They also added one really cool feature for your dually guys out there, back-up sensors that recognize dually fenders. This new feature could save you an expensive bill for some body work! The coolest part about all this? These features all work while pulling a trailer!

Form Meets Function with 5th Generation Ram’s newly designed Exterior
The 5th Generation Ram Heavy Duty trucks got some major exterior upgrades that play a role in helping performance too. A newly designed RAM Grille that is 30% larger feeds a new 39″ huge radiator. Ram improved this new generation to lead this segment with only .49 drag. New LED taillights provide better vision when backing up at night. The new Ram headlights also have an available directional control options, helping you to see better at night. Pretty neat feature for a pick-up!

Leveling Kits are an amazing alternative to lift kits. They’re more affordable, and they retain most of your factory components. This gives you factory ride characteristics and slightly better clearance to add some bigger tires and wheels. Leveling kits come in three different styles: coil spring spacers, replacement coil springs, and bigger torsion keys. When it comes to a four-wheel drive 6.7L Cummins, your two options are a coil spring spacer, or all new coil springs. While there are two styles of leveling kits for these trucks, there are literally hundreds of leveling kit systems available today. Confused yet? Don’t be. Here is everything you need to know about picking a 4th Generation 6.7L Cummins leveling kit.
4th Gen Cummins Replacement Coil Spring Leveling Kits
The best and most comfortable riding option, without a doubt, is replacement coil springs. Paired with larger shocks, this form of leveling kit will give you the smoothest ride, and even be an improvement on your stock steering. Carli suspension, Thuren fabrication, and Bilstein are three well known companies that specialize in Coil spring replacement leveling kits for 4th Gen Cummins trucks. While these leveling kits are ideal, they are more expensive than coil spring spacers, the next best option. You can expect to spend $500 or more on these Cummins leveling kits.
The Bilstein leveling kits pictured below are an affordable, high quality leveling kit for a 4th Generation Cummins. This kit comes with reservoir shocks and all the necessary hardware for a complete installation. It’s completely bolt-on and installation is very easy, even for people who aren’t mechanics. The only addition I would make is to purchase an adjustable track bar. After installation, make sure you have the truck aligned as soon as possible!
Instead of replacement coil springs, coil spring spacers sit on top of the coils and add some extra height! This method is very cheap, however, it doesn’t offer the same ride quality as replacing your coil springs. There are hundreds of options out there for coil spring spacers. Make sure you replace your factory shocks or add shock extenders to help retain factory ride quality. An aftermarket adjustable track bar is also a good upgrade to improve ride quality. All necessary hardware should be included. Check out some popular 4th generation Cummins leveling kits available on Amazon below!
