2021 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Diesel Buyer’s Guide: Specs, Towing, & More

2021 6.7L Powerstroke Diesel Truck Specs, Towing Ratings, Performance, and Maintenance Information

One of the most powerful and capable Diesel engines being manufactured for use in heavy duty trucks today is Ford’s 6.7L V-8 Powerstroke engine. It is the premier powertrain choice in Ford Superduty Trucks and Cab & Chassis trucks. 2021 Ford Superduty Trucks, Ford F-250, F-350, and F-450s, have 475 horsepower and 1050 lb-ft of torque when mated to the 6.7L Powerstroke V-8 Diesel engine and the 10R140 10-Speed automatic transmission. These incredible performance numbers help deliver serious towing capabilities and plenty of power for passing. This powertrain doesn’t come cheap however, costing thousands of dollars more than the standard 6.2L V8 gasoline-powered engine, or even Ford’s new Godzilla 7.3L V-8 gasoline-powered engine.

Depending on how you plan on using the 2021 Ford Superduty you are considering buying, you might not need the 6.7L Powerstroke engine. Even if you have decided to purchase the 6.7L Powerstroke (We highly recommend it), you also have a ton of different options. Should you go with a single rear-wheel (SRW) Ford F-250, or should you go all out with the Ford F-450 Dually. In this post, our 2021 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Buyer’s Guide, we’ll compare the different Superduty trucks when equipped with a 6.7L Diesel engine side-by-side. We’ll give your 2021 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke V-8 Engine specs, performance information, Towing Ratings, and even tell you the required maintenance needed on these vehicles. Let’s get into it.

2021 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke V-8 Diesel Engine

Since the 6.7L Powerstroke V-8 Diesel engine was introduced in 2011, it’s been a staple in Ford Superduty Trucks. It replaced the problematic 6.4L Powerstroke that was the last International Navistar made motor used in Ford Diesel trucks. It’s been so successful that even 10 years later, it is still being used by Ford. The 6.7l Powerstroke is far from the same engine it was 10 years ago though. It’s been improved upon, and 2021 Superduty trucks use the third generation 6.7L Powerstroke engine. In our next section we go further into detail about this engine and its design.

6.7L Powerstroke Engine Design & Features

The 6.7L Powerstroke engine is a diesel, 90-Degree 8-cylinder engine that features an OHV, or Overhead Valve design. It offers drivers the best of durability and performance using the latest technology and materials. It is also significantly quieter than previous Ford diesel engines.

For a strong foundation, the 6.7L Powerstroke uses a Compacted Graphite Iron block. CGI blocks offer great durability while simultaneously being significantly lighter. This feature paired with other engine design elements like Aluminum cylinder heads reduce overall engine weight. These, along with other engine design elements and the Superduty’s aluminum body paneling contribute to better fuel efficiency. When compared to previous iterations of Ford’s 6.7L Powerstroke engine, the third generation features a number of structural enhancements to handle the tremendous capabilities of these engines. The Cylinder head, engine block, connecting rods, and bearings offer greater reliability and the ability to withstand greater cylinder pressures and the extra output. New steel pistons are also used in these engines for higher firing pressure and lower friction.

Performance

2021 Ford Pickup trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke Diesel engine offer a segment high 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque from the factory. Previous numbers only attainable by diesel tuning and other diesel performance mods, these numbers are more than enough for most owners. Throttle response while driving empty, loaded with cargo, or while towing a heavy trailer is impressive. Thanks to the truck’s lightweight body, and weight-saving engine design, fuel economy is also incredible. Previously ignored on diesel trucks, there is another element that qualifies as a performance characteristic, quietness. Thanks to the latest technology, these engines are as quiet as they are capable.

There are a couple of 6.7L Powerstroke features that make the greatest impact when it comes to these engines performance, efficiency, and quietness. The third generation 6.7L Powerstroke utilizes a new fuel injection system with new injectors. These injectors reduce noise and improve combustion by offering up to 8 injection events per stroke and more precise fuel spray. A highly-advanced, electronically-actuated Variable Geometry Turbocharger also gives owners ideal performance characteristics.

6.7L Powerstroke V-8 Vs. 6.2L Gas Powered V-8 Vs. 7.3L Gas Powered V-8

There are three distinct powertrain choices for the 2021 Ford Super Duty Pickup truck. The base model is a 6.2L V-8 engine offering the lowest performance figures but it’s a simple, rugged workhorse that makes a great fleet vehicle. The middle option is a newer, 7.3L “Godzilla” V-8. No, it’s not the 7.3L Powerstroke we all know and love, but it offers greater performance than the 6.2L V-8 while also being a non-complicated motor that is durable. This is another great option for fleets or for those wanting better performance than the base 6.2 V-8 offers. The third and last option is the 6.7L Powerstroke. This is the premier choice for haulers and people who need serious capability. The 6.7l Powerstroke is a Diesel engine that has made a name for itself in the last 10 years as being one of the most powerful and reliable diesels around.

For a full comparison of how these engines compare against each other, look at the chart below. You can compare critical engine design information as well as performance specs.

Regular Cab Towing Specs

Regular-Cab-6-7l-powerstroke-towing-specs
For maximum utility, tow capacity, and payload the regular cab is the way to go. If you take a look at the numbers below, the regular cab Ford Superduty with the 6.7L Powerstroke Diesel engine offers the highest tow capacity compared to Supercab or Crew Cab configurations. It lacks the space for more passengers however and these trucks don’t come available in higher trim levels like the Limited or Platinum. These are best used as work vehicles.

SuperCab Towing Specs

2021 6.7L Powerstroke Supercab Towing Specs
The SuperCab configuration offers a compromise on both ends. The back seat still allows for rear passengers, just with less legroom than a full crew cab. The smaller cabin does result in slightly higher towing capacity and payloads however. Unfortunately, the F-450 isn’t made in this configuration. It is a great compromise and option for fleet vehicles.

Different 6.7L Powerstrokes for Different Needs

2021 Ford Superduty F-250

2021 Ford F-250 6.7L Powerstroke
2021 Ford F-250 6.7L Powerstroke

Ford’s F-250 is the entry level Super duty, offering the lowest towing capabilities, but the best drivability. It comes in the XL, XLT, Lariat, Limited, Platinum, and King Ranch Trims. A newer, Tremor Off-Road Edition is also available offering superior off-road performance. This is attributed to an upgraded suspension including a factory installed lift kit and 35″ Tires.

Capabilities

The 2021 Ford F-250 is the lightest duty truck available with the 6.7L Powerstroke V-8 Diesel. For infrequent towers, and daily drivers the F-250 is your ideal choice. 2021 Ford F-250 pickup trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke engine have a max conventional tow capacity of 20,000 lbs and a max fifth-wheel/Gooseneck tow capacity of 22,800 lbs . These trucks only come in a single rear-wheel configuration so they’re much lighter than the F-350 or F-450 pickup trucks with dual rear wheels. This lesser weight translates to savings at the pump and less maintenance because you only have to worry about 4 tires, instead of 6 with a dually.

Pricing

Pricing for 2021 Ford F-250s starts at around $46,420 when configured in a base XL trim with 2WD and the 6.7L Powerstroke Engine. The Diesel engine upgrade is a $10,495 upgrade itself. With higher trim, driveline and other configurations the price will go up. Fully decked out Limited packages can exceed $90,000. These of course are MSRP figures and depending on when you buy, you might be able to get rebates that can reduce the price by thousands of dollars. Want to see what rebates are available? Check out our 2021 Superduty Buyer’s Guide for rebate information.

Ford Superduty F-350

2021 Ford F-350 Superduty with the 6.7L Powerstroke Diesel engine.

The Middle-Man of the Superduty lineup is the F-350 pickup truck. Ford’s F-350 offers a little more heavy-duty composition and ruggedness than F-250 pickups. It suffers from slightly stiffer ride quality while unloaded, but it more than makes up for it when it comes to towing and payload. In fact, the Dual Rear-Wheel F-350 has the highest payload figures of the three Super Duty pickups.

Capabilities

Ford’s F-350 has a significant advantage over the F-250 when it comes to towing. It is available in a Dual Rear-Wheel Configuration, commonly known as a Dually. This Rear Axle configuration overs significantly better payload and towing capabilities. It also results in lower fuel economy and higher maintenance costs however. We advise that you seriously consider what you are going to use your truck for. If you are going to be towing frequently the Dually configuration is a better choice. If not, the SRW configuration is the way to go.

Max conventional tow capacity for SRW Ford F-350 pickup trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke is 20,000 lbs. DRW (Dually) variants have a maximum conventional tow capacity 21,200 lbs. Max Fifth-Wheel/Gooseneck towing capacity is 22,800 lbs on SRW models, and 35,750 lbs on DRW models. This makes the Dually the ideal choice for people towing fifth-wheel campers or gooseneck trailers.

Pricing

Ford F-350 pricing starts at $37,440. This is with the base 6.2L V-8 gasoline engine. The 6.7L Powerstroke diesel V-8 engine is a $10,495 upgrade. Ford F-350 Limited Pricing starts at $87,060 and can exceed $90,000 with options and add-ons.

Ford Superduty F-450

2021 Ford F-450

For people needing the greatest towing capabilities, the Ford F-450 is your ideal solution. The F-450 offers the greatest durability and capabilities of any Ford pickup truck. They’re perfect for people who tow frequent, heavy loads. They are only available in a dual rear wheel configuration (Dually). Therefore, they are heavy and not ideal for commuting unloaded. Unlike the Ford F-250 or F-350, the F-450 comes standard with the 6.7L Powerstroke Engine. That is a major reason for its higher starting price.

Capabilities

While performance figures remain the same, towing figures are greatly improved upon with the F-450. Max Conventional tow capacity for a 2021 Ford F-450 with the 6.7L Powerstroke engine is 24,200 pounds. Max fifth-wheel/Gooseneck tow capacity is 37,000 pounds. Surprisingly, max payload is actually better on F-350 models than the F-450. If you need the higher payload capabilities, stick with the F-350. That being said, the F-450 will do a better job when it comes to durability, and towing heavy loads. If you’re going to be pulling a huge fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer, the F-450 should garner some serious consideration.

Pricing

Thanks to a standard 6.7L Powerstroke Engine in every F-450, starting pricing on 2021 Ford F-450s is much higher. Base XL models in a regular cab configuration cost $50,410 before any additional upgrades. A fully decked out F-450 can exceed $90,000.

2021 6.7L Powerstroke Maintenance

If you’re going to own a 2021 Ford Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke diesel V-8 engine, you better be aware of the required maintenance that these trucks require. To help prospective buyers, we’ve accumulated all of the most critical 2021 6.7L Powerstroke maintenance information. Down below, we’ll go over the required service intervals, fluid capacities, and even a list of the oil, fluids, and filters you’re going to need!

Service Intervals

2021 6.7L Powerstroke service intervals are going to depend significantly on how you use your vehicle. If you use your vehicle mostly for commuting and occasionally tow lighter loads, you should be just fine with the regular operating conditions service schedule. Your vehicle comes equipped with intelligent oil life monitoring, and it should reflect these driving habits. On the other hand, if you tow very heavy loads frequently, use your vehicle as part of a fleet or commercial vehicle, or if you idle excessively you will need to follow the severe operating conditions service schedule. This will help make sure your vehicle and its Powerstroke engine last as long as possible.

Monthly Maintenance Checklist

  • Check Air Filter Restriction Gauge. Replace if needed.
  • Take a look at engine oil level. Make sure engine oil stays in the recommended range.
  • Check Tire Pressure in all tires, even the spare.
  • Add windshield wiper fluid if needed.
  • Check Fuel/Water separator and drain it if needed.

At Every Maintenance Interval, Also:

2021 Ford F-150 3.0L Powerstroke Specs Revealed

Details about the new 2021 Ford F-150 are here. An all-new engine, the 3.5L V-6 Hybrid PowerBoost, joins Ford’s existing 2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8, and the 3.0L Powerstroke diesel. A new body style accompanies these engines along with new technology that makes the F-150 one of the most impressive job-site ready trucks we’ve ever seen. It can also tow up to 14,000 pounds, an 800 pound improvement over the highest rated 2020 model. Max payload is also increased to a whopping 3,325 pounds. While Ford made big improvements to the lineup as a whole, the 2021 F-150 3.0L Powerstroke engine remains largely unchanged. Despite no changes being made, the 3.0L Powerstroke is still a very viable option and should be considered over other trucks for people who tow frequently.

2021 Ford F-150 3.0L Powerstroke Performance

3.0L Powerstroke Diesel Engine

The new 2021 F-150 with the 3.0L Powerstroke engine offers owners 250 horsepower at 3,250 rpm and 440 ft-lb of torque at 1,750 rpm. A max payload of 1,840 is available on Supercab models, while the Supercrew has a max payload of 1,805 lbs. Max tow capacity is 12,100 pounds when equipped with the max tow package. While the 2021 3.0L Powerstroke doesn’t make the highest numbers in the F-150 lineup, we still prefer its durability and ability to tow compared to other models.

How does the 3.0l Powerstroke Compare to Other Gas-Powered Models?

The 3.0L Powerstroke was the fuel economy champion ford Ford’s 2020 F-150 lineup. With the new 3.5L Powerboost engine however, the 3.0L Powerstroke may have to remove its crown and hand it over. The 3.5L PowerBoost engine’s fuel economy isn’t available yet, but Ford has mentioned that it will be able to get at least 700 miles out of a single tank. Now, fuel economy estimates never take towing into consideration. The major draw of the 3.0L Powerstroke engine is that it’s a diesel, and diesel trucks get significantly better fuel economy while towing.

While the 3.0L Powerstroke may have lower torque than both the 3.5l PowerBoost and the 3.5L EcoBoost engines, it reaches max torque significantly faster. The 3.0L Powerstroke reaches peak torque at only 1,750 rpm while both the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost and Powerboost reach peak torque at 3,000 rpm. Hybrid engines are relatively new to trucks. We are very interested in seeing how the hybrid motor impacts towing. For now, we still like the F-150 with the 3.0L Powerstroke if you’re going to be frequently towing.

2021 Ford F-150 Technology

The 2021 Ford F-150’s new technology is helpful on both the luxury and functionality fronts. Pro Power Onboard makes the F-150 a portable generator capable of powering a job site for an entire day. It has 120V and 240V power sources, easily accessible in the bed to plug in power tools. It’s a perfect partner to the tailgate work surface that offers a mobile workbench. The truck’s interior also has an available work surface option. It converts the center console to a flat surface, perfect for working on a laptop.

The F-150’s Trailer Reverse Guidance and Pro Backup Assist features make backing up a trailer a breeze. Trailer Reverse Guidance uses the F-150’s high-resolution cameras to provide multiple views as well as guidance on how to turn the wheel when backing up a trailer. When set up, the Pro backup assist makes backing up a trailer as easy as turning a dial.

A bigger center digital display is standard on all trims. XL and low XLT trims receive an 8″ touch screen, while upper XLT trims and above receive a new 12″ screen. The gauge cluster is brand new, with more luxurious models receiving a “smart” 15″ digital gauge cluster. Rear view cameras are also standard on all trims. For extra comfort, a max-recline feature is available on King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited Trims allowing the front seats to recline nearly 180 degrees.

2021 F-150 Availability

Ford anticipates the new 2021 F-150 will be available at dealerships this fall. Hopefully we don’t have any additional CoronaVirus complications so we can see these new trucks sooner than later.

2020 Ford Superduty With 6.7L Powerstroke Dethrones Ram HD

Ram made headlines when they released their 2019 Ram HD, capable of producing 1,000 ft/lb of torque with the Cummins/Aisin powertrain combination. Ford didn’t stay idle for long. The new 2020 Superduty with the revised 6.7L Powerstroke engine will offer Ford customers 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The most exciting part? These numbers apply to every 2020 Superduty with the 6.7L Powerstroke, not just the F-350 or F-450 Dually.

Superior Towing

Horsepower and torque are a pretty number, but how about tow capacity? The 2020 Superduty equipped with the 6.7L Powerstroke will also feature best in class tow capacity at 37,000 lbs. That is a little higher than the 2020 Ram HD at 35,100 lbs or GM’s 2020 Silverado HD at 35,500 lbs. Obviously, tow capacity is not standard across the board. 2020 Ford F-Series Superduty trucks will also boast best in class conventional tow capacity of 24,200 lbs.

Offroad Improvements

2020 Ford Superduty Tremor Off-road package
2020 Ford Superduty trucks equipped with the 6.7L Powerstroke are available with the Tremor Off-road package.

Ford also took a significant step to appease Powerstroke owners who want better off-road performance. 2020 Superduty trucks featuring the Tremor Off-road package offer customers 35″ all-terrain tires and a 2 inch front lift from the factory. You can find out the other improvements the Tremor Off-road package offers by clicking here.

Other 2020 Ford Superduty Improvements

Other 2020 Superduty changes include a new 10-speed TorqShift transmission, Pro Trailer backup assist, and trailer reverse guidance. Many features that are considered premium, like lane keeping assist, pre-collision assist with emergency braking, and blind spot monitoring will be standard on XLT trims and above. This gives customers buying lower trims access to better features and more value. Overall, Ford made their trucks safer, more powerful, and more off-road capable than they have ever been before. Be on the lookout for the new 2020 Superduty. They will be hitting dealerships by the end of this year!

Ford Introduces New Tremor Off-Road Package Available on 2020 Powerstroke Trucks

Ford’s Most Off-Road Capable Powerstroke To Date!

New 2020 Ford SuperDuty with the Tremor Off-Road Package

Ford just announced a new off-road package available for the 2020 SuperDuty trucks! Unlike Ram’s Power Wagon which is only available with the 6.4L Hemi engine, Ford’s Tremor Off-Road package is available on trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke diesel engine. The Tremor package is also available on Superduty trucks with the new 7.3L gas V8 engine.

What inspired this new off-road package? Ford claims that modern truck owners use their trucks for more than just work. People use trucks for work during the week. On weekends they take the family boat to the lake or go camping. The Tremor Off-Road Package lets Ford truck owners use their trucks for both work and play without compromising payload or tow capacity. Unlike some available truck packages, the Tremor package features numerous upgrades that make Tremor-equipped Superduty trucks very different from standard models.

What Trucks will feature the Tremor Off-Road Package?

Ford F-250 and F-350 Superduty trucks featuring the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trims can contain the Tremor package. Only single rear wheel configurations, even in F-350 models, will be available. A 6.75 foot bed is standard for all trucks with the Tremor Off-Road package.

What Off-Road Upgrades Does The Tremor Package Contain?

Ford trucks with the Tremor Off-Road package will feature 35 inch all-terrain GoodYear Wrangler DuraTracs from the factory! This is the biggest tire size ever placed on a stock truck from any manufacturer. These tires are wrapped around 18″ matte-black wheels. Trucks will also feature a 2″ lift in the front. Overall, these upgrades give this version of the Superduty 10.8 inches of ground clearance and best-in-class water ford of 33 inches. Approach angles of 31.65 degrees and departure angles of 24.51 degrees are the best ever found on a SuperDuty.

The Tremor Off-Road package also features unique progressive-rate leaf springs that make driving over rough terrain more comfortable without sacrificing towing capabilities. These new springs work with huge, new shocks custom-tuned for the best on-road and off-road performance. These shocks carry substantial amounts of oil to keep internal temperatures low.

35" GoodYear Wrangler DuraTrac Tires and matte-black 18" wheels are standard on 2020 SuperDuty trucks equipped with the Tremor Off-Road Package.

Other Tremor Off-Road Package Features

Other features of this off-road package include an electronically controlled, locking rear differential and a new Dana limited-slip front differential. This front differential uses the trucks’ brakes to send power to the wheels when a tire has lost traction in certain drive modes. 2020 SuperDuty trucks with the Tremor package will be available with six different drive modes. Drivers can select normal, eco, tow/haul, slippery, or deep/snow modes. A sixth, rock-crawl mode is also available. Trail Control, a feature on the Raptor and Ranger trucks will also be available on this version of the SuperDuty. Off-road running boards and skid plates are also standard, to help protect these trucks.

Ford Introduces New 2020 Super Duty

Ford just released the first details on their new 2020 Super Duty trucks coming out this Fall. Major performance changes include two new available engines, a new transmission, and chassis upgrades. Because of these changes, Ford managed to post increases in both towing and payload ratings! In fact, Ford is labeling the 2020 Super Duty as their most powerful and capable heavy duty truck to date. New interior and exterior designs, along with new smart trailer technology will also be added. Here is what we know so far.

2020 Super Duty Performance

Two New Engines

Ford’s 2020 Super Duty will have two new engine offerings in addition to their existing 6.2L Gas V8. First, a new 7.3L Gasoline powered V8 engine will be available on the new Super Duty. Ford believes this engine will be the most powerful Gas V8 engine in its class. A new third generation 6.7L Powerstroke V8 diesel engine will also be available. The new Powerstroke engine will utilize a new 36,000 PSI fuel injection system, new injectors, and a redesigned variable-geometry (VGT) turbocharger to achieve higher horsepower and torque numbers. How much higher? That information isn’t available yet, but as soon as we have more details, we’ll be sure to share!

The new 6.7L Powerstroke will receive critical structural improvements to the cylinder head, block, connecting rods, and bearings to achieve higher output and cylinder pressure. Steel Pistons were also added, resulting in higher firing pressure capability and less friction.

New TorqShift 10-Speed Transmission

The 2020 Super Duty will receive a new 10-Speed TorqShift transmission this Fall. All 2020 Super Duty trucks, not just the diesel, will be available with the new TorqShift. This new transmission features a much wider gear ratio range than the previous 6-Speed, to handle the most difficult towing tasks. Class-exclusive live-drive PTO (Power Take Off) will still be available. The Live-Drive PTO option allows customers to power accessory industrial equipment or accessories with the truck in motion. New drive modes like eco, slippery, ,deep sand and snow are now available. Ford managed to accomplish all this while utilizing the same space and only adding 3.5 pounds to the new TorqShift!

Refined Interior

Numerous interior changes were made to higher trim packages. Updated decorative appliqués were used on doors and the media bin door of Lariat trucks. Platinum Super Duties added Onyx Argento wood. Interiors of 2020 Limited trim trucks received an overhaul. Ebony and Highland Tan colors grace their new interiors. Genuine leather, ash wood, and brushed aluminum adorn the trim. The leather-wrapped instrument panel topper, door armrests, seating, and console lids all received decorative stitching. Floor mats now feature an embroidered Super Duty logo. Miko suede is even used as a headliner for Limited trucks too.

Exterior Updates

Ford’s 2020 Super Duty didn’t receive a full body-style redesign like GM or Ram. Instead, they opted to make subtle changes to optimize performance. A new front-end improves cooling and lighting performance. A new high-airflow grille on all Dually trucks increases powertrain cooling capacity. This is accompanied with a new bumper and air dam for further improvements in air induction and cooling capacity. New LED headlights give the 2020 Super Duty a new look too. Higher trims feature headlights that maintain continuous accent lighting. New tail lights, rear bumpers, and tailgates bring style to the rear end of the new Super Duty trucks too.

Technology

Every diesel truck manufacturer has added significant trailering technology to their 2020 model trucks so far. Therefore, Ford had to make some pretty big strides in towing technology too. As a result, they will be introducing a new Pro Trailer Backup Assist to their 2020 Super Duty. Drivers will be able to use the Pro Trailer Backup Assist knob to steer the truck using the rear camera. With this feature, Ford hopes to make it much easier to navigate tight spaces. This is made possible by the trucks’ Trailer Reverse Guidance System that shows trailer angle and direction. Then, it provides steering advice to easily back-up your trailer. In addition, the Pro Trailer Assist feature can be used in conjunction with all trailers, even fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers.

Ford is adding FordPass Connect on every new 2020 Super Duty too. As a result, Super Duty owners will have connectivity no matter where they are, with Wi-Fi access for up to ten devices. New Safety features are also standard on XLT and higher trims, including lane-keeping alerts, Pre-Collision Assist, and a blind spot monitoring system with trailer coverage will be available. Wireless charging and USB-C ports will also be added to Super Duty trucks.

Buying a Truck in 2018: New Potential and Issues

Diesel Trucks today aren’t what they used to be. They used to be slow, rugged, and basic machines meant for strenuous work, but today they offer comparable features to modern luxury cars. They ride like cadillacs and with modern technology are extremely powerful and quick.  However, with all of this new technology and new options they are not always as reliable and bullet proof as their predecessors.

Today’s diesel pickups are comprised of thousands of sophisticated parts that amount to the vast amount of features and power these new beasts are laying down. However, with all these parts come new issues. Every make and model has its own set of problems while also having its advantages. While many seem obsolete, some can be a big deal to a Diesel Lover like myself. Here are some common pros and cons with today’s Diesel Trucks.

Ford

Pros:

  • Lightweight aluminum construction allows for better fuel economy and faster acceleration.
  • Many exclusive and high-end features, especially the trailer assist system.
  • Tons of Cab Space
  • Lots of Power & quick acceleration

Cons:

  • Numb Steering Feel
  • Slightly Fragile because of aluminum
  • Aluminum body repair is also more expensive
  • More moving parts and less mechanic friendly under the hood. I’ve never been a huge fan of Powerstrokes because of the complexity and difficulty of some repairs. This leads to a lot more labor and increased labor costs at the mechanic.
  • Stiffer Suspension compared to GM Model trucks associated with straight axle.

GM

Pros:

  • The Legendary Allison Transmission
  • Independent Front Suspension Allows for a great ride
  • Great Motors

Cons:

  • Independent Front Suspension can be more costly and complex to add lift kits. Bigger Tires and Wheels can also lead to issues with front end, requires more heavy duty parts
  • New L5P Duramax has lack of performance parts and tuners because of “Uncrackable” ECM.
  • Slightly tighter space compared to other makes.
  • Some Trims lack in luxury features.
  • Expensive
  • Fuel Economy is average, not very impressive
  • Turning Radius

Ram

Pros:

  • Often times cheaper than the other makes/models
  • Variety of Trim packages with the high end models being very luxurious.
  • Largest Interior /w Megacab package. The truck’s rear seats recline!
  • Arguably the best Diesel Motor, Inline 6
  • Best Fuel Economy
  • Still Carry Manual Transmission Trucks
  • Turning Radius is Amazing

Cons:

  • Transmissions are Sub-par
  • Different trims have different HP/TQ
  • Slightly slower acceleration speed when it’s stock compared to its V8 Rivals
