Dee Zee Tailgate Assist Product Review

The Best $40 Product for your truck. Stop slamming your tailgate!

GM did something fantastic when they implemented their EZ lifting and lower tailgates. Duramax owners no longer have to deal with slamming tailgates, and they can easily lift their tailgate back up. You don’t realize how nice of a feature it is until you have it. About two months ago, I traded in my L5P for a Cummins. I love my Cummins, but I quickly realized I had reverted back to a primitive tailgate. Fortunately for me, RealTruck just hooked me up with a Dee Zee Tailgate Assist. The Dee Zee tailgate assist was designed to give you similar results as GM’s EZ lift and lower tailgates, without breaking the bank. Here are my thoughts after installing  Dee Zee’s Tailgate assist and having it on my truck for a couple of days.

MY FINAL RULING ON THE Dee Zee Tailgate Assist

This is the most useful product I've come across that you can buy for your truck for less than $40. If you're someone who regularly uses the bed of your truck, this is a cheap investment to make your life easier, make your tailgate a little safer to operate, and preserve your tailgate at the same time. It's super easy to install with only basic hand tools, and does not require any drilling. I will definitely buy the Dee Zee tailgate assist for any future trucks that I own. I think the Dee Zee tailgate assist would also make an excellent and affordable gift for family members or friends.

Dee Zee really hit it out of the park with their tailgate assist. All components and hardware were of a good quality. While I didn't experience any issues, I have read about people having issues installing these. You have to be very careful to make sure you don't strip the threads on the Nutsert (Blind Nut). If that happens, you won't be able to use that tailgate assist, or frankly another one without removing the nutsert. Just take your time and follow the instructions exactly, and you will be fine. This product also comes with a three year warranty, so you'll get to enjoy this product for quite a while.

I was honestly surprised at how well this product worked being only $40. The Dee Zee Tailgate Assist makes dropping your tailgate so easy. The gas dampened shock operates very smoothly when you open your tailgate. You don't need to guide the tailgate down or anything, it is as simple as opening the tailgate and letting it go. The Dee Zee tailgate assist has provided me with consistent operation. After Install, I must've opened and closed the tailgate one hundred times to make sure it's up to the task. While the tailgate assist makes a significant difference in slowing the fall of the tailgate, I don't believe it makes a drastic impact on raising the tailgate back up. It removes a little bit of the weight, but it's definitely not a night and day difference. However, I'd pay $40 just for the dropping feature, helping lighten the tailgate was just an added bonus.

I don't think I've ever been excited about a part for my truck that is this cheap. The Dee Zee tailgate is a flat-out bargain at $40. That is a cheap price to pay for better operation of your tailgate and to also make it safer to use. Especially in the case of lifted trucks, vertically challenged people or kids can have a tough time opening a tailgate safely. This alleviates these issues.

I can't tell you how many times I've bought something for my truck and the company claimed it was a seamless installation, only to find out that nothing fits right and it takes way longer than expected. It was refreshing installing the Dee Zee tailgate assist, as it took no time at all, and the instructions were super easy to follow along with. It works together with your factory cables and tailgate components, so there is no drilling or crazy installation procedures required. All together it took me about 10 minutes from start to finish. The only flaw I noticed was that the driver side of my tailgate sits a little off when closed. This could be due to my install, but it is just me being picky. I don't think anyone would notice who doesn't know what they're looking at.
